Day 20 - Happy in Hickory!
Hickory dickory dock, the bike rode up the hummock. Again and Again and AGAIN! Yesterday was my biggest day for climbing so far with 2949 feet. It was very hard getting from Forest City, NC to Hickory, NC. I'm happy to say that the Red Roof Inn is much better than the Days Inn I stayed at in Forest City. And Hickory seems like a pretty cool town, so I'm hanging around for a day. I need to let my legs recover a little bit and since I enjoyed the brewery last night I figured I'd see what else is available within Uber distance.
The day was beautiful for riding. I used the headphones only for the Google directions. I will continue to do that as I enjoyed the birds and the noises of outside better than the constant sound of music. While the climbing was continuous, it wasn't steep. Fortunately, if it's not all that steep I can get into a gear and just crank. But the ride to Yadkinville is 60 miles and I didn't want to take the chance that my legs would give out, hence hanging in Hickory for a day.
As I was riding yesterday, those of you following me on Instagram saw that I was getting closer and closer to the Appalachian Mountains. Definitely riding through the foothills. I've really enjoyed it though! Got some good beer and good food last night at the Blowing Rock Brewery. Also found a cool bike shop next door. That was a good thing because I needed to get a new frame pump. And to put the cherry on top they served some other local beers in the bike shop! Loved the concept. I'd heard about it before out west, but this is the first time I've seen it! Today, I'll be checking out the Olde Hickory Tap Room.
Happy In Hickory.
